SUMMARY OF THE EVENT:

The Department of Fashion Designing at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, organized an industrial visit to Bangalore from 3rd September 2024 to 7th September 2024.For the 2nd and final year students’ The objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to the fashion industry, enhance their understanding of textile processes, and familiarize them with current industry practices. The students, accompanied by faculty members, visited three prominent industries:

Central Silk Board, Texport Overseas Pvt Ltd, and Shahi Exports.

 

Day 1: Visit to Central Silk Board

On the first day, the students visited the Central Silk Board, a renowned organization dedicated to the development of the silk industry in India. The visit started with a brief introduction to the history and significance of silk production in India. The students were given a detailed tour of the facilities, including the reeling, spinning, and weaving units. They observed various processes involved in silk production, from silkworm rearing to the final fabric. The interaction with the experts at the Central Silk Board helped students gain insights into the challenges and advancements in the silk industry.

Sericulture Process: The students were briefed on the entire sericulture process, from silkworm rearing to the extraction of silk threads. They were shown the different stages of silkworm growth and the techniques used to extract and process silk.

Silk Weaving Techniques: The students observed various traditional and modern silk weaving techniques. They gained insights into the tools and machinery used in silk production.

Quality Control: A session was conducted on the quality control measures taken by the Central Silk Board to ensure the production of high-quality silk. The students learned about the testing procedures and standards followed by the board.

Day 2: Visit to Texport Overseas Pvt Ltd

The second day of the visit was dedicated to Texport Overseas Pvt Ltd, a leading garment manufacturing company. The students were welcomed by the company’s management team, who provided an overview of the company’s operations, including design, production, quality control. The tour of the manufacturing units allowed students to observe the cutting, stitching, and finishing processes in action.  The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where students clarified their doubts about the apparel manufacturing industry.

Garment Manufacturing Process: The students were given a tour of the production floor, where they observed the various stages of garment manufacturing, including cutting, stitching, and finishing.

Design and Sampling: The students learned about the design and sampling process, where new designs are created, and prototypes are developed before mass production.

Export Procedures: A session was conducted on the export procedures followed by Texport Overseas Pvt Ltd. The students were informed about the documentation, quality standards, and logistics involved in exporting garments to international markets.

Day 3: Visit to Shahi Exports

On the third day, the students visited Shahi Exports, one of the largest garment exporters in India. The visit began with a presentation on the company’s history, market presence, and commitment to ethical manufacturing. Students were taken through various sections of the factory, where they observed the workflow from fabric cutting to final garment packaging. They were impressed by the state-of-the-art machinery and technology used in production. The focus on sustainability, worker welfare, and compliance with international standards left a lasting impression on the students.

Sustainable Practices: The students were introduced to the sustainable practices followed by Shahi Exports, including the use of eco-friendly materials, waste management, and energy-efficient production methods.

Automation in Garment Production: The students observed the use of automation in garment production, including advanced machinery and technology that enhances productivity and efficiency.

Employee Welfare: A session was conducted on the importance of employee welfare and the initiatives taken by Shahi Exports to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for its workers.

The workshop enhanced students’ digital content skills, fostering critical thinking and practical knowledge essential for the modern media industry, aligning with the goals of providing quality education and lifelong learning.

–  SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

By focusing on digital media’s role in sustainable communication, the event emphasized how effective content management can support informed communities, contributing to more resilient and connected urban environments.

A total of 53 students attended the event, and feedback was collected to gauge their experience and satisfaction.

  • Overall Quality of the Event: 60% of students rated the event as excellent, while 32% rated it as good, and 8% rated it as satisfactory.
  • Depth of Content:84% of participants found the content depth satisfactory, and 16% found it moderate.
  • Meeting Expectations: 96% of attendees felt that the event met their expectations, while 4% did not.
  • Suggestions for Improvement: 28% of participants suggested shortening the duration of the event, and 20% recommended increasing interactivity. 52% had no suggestions for improvement.

Key Takeaways:

Exposure to Industrial Processes: The visit provided students with hands-on exposure to the processes involved in textile and garment production, which enhanced their practical knowledge beyond the classroom.

Understanding of Market Dynamics: Interactions with industry professionals helped students understand market trends, consumer preferences, and the challenges faced by manufacturers in the fashion industry.

Networking Opportunities: The visit offered students the opportunity to network with industry experts, which could be beneficial for future internships and career opportunities.

Outcome:

The industrial visit to Bangalore was a highly informative and enriching experience for the students of the Department of Fashion Designing

The workshop on “Procurement of Content for Electronic Media” was highly appreciated by participants, with 60% rating it excellent and 84% finding the depth of content satisfactory. The event effectively met the expectations of 96% of the attendees. Key insights included a solid grasp of content procurement (92%) and practical content creation techniques (68%). Suggestions for future improvements focused on reducing the event duration and enhancing interactivity.
