ORIENTATION PROGRAM FOR FIRST YEAR UG/PG STUDENTS
The Department of Biotechnology, FSH, SRMIST, Ramapuram organized the first-year orientation program for B.Sc. (Batch: 2024-2027) and M.Sc. (Batch: 2024-2026) Biotechnology students from 9th to 11th July 2024, in Room No. 105, First Floor, New Admin Block, SRMIST, Ramapuram. A total of 77 students participated in the program.
The first session on 9th July 2024 began with a welcome address by Dr. M. Kamaraj, Associate Professor and Head of the Department. Following his address, he provided an overview of the Department of Biotechnology, FSH, SRMIST, Ramapuram. He introduced the faculty members to the first-year students and briefed them on the department’s resources and facilities. Additionally, he explained the curriculum and the various club activities within the department. The session continued with a guest lecture on “Spectrum Research in Biotechnology” by Dr.Vetriselvan K, Assistant Professor (Sr.G), Department of Chemical Engineering, Anna University, Chennai. Dr. Vetriselvan elaborated on the research aspects of biotechnology across various fields, including healthcare, crop production, agriculture, and industrial uses of crops and other products. The first-year students were inspired by his speech and gained new hopes and expectations from the department.
On 10th of July 2024, the third session featured an expert talk by Mr. Balaji, Senior Manager – Human Resources at Rainbow Children’s Hospitals, Chennai. He spoke on “Prospects of Industry in Biotechnology,” sharing his industry experiences and elaborating on various industry prospects. He also discussed expectations from the industry sector and the importance of skill development. The session concluded with interactive discussions, where students actively participated and gained valuable insights into the biotechnological industry.
The fourth session, held on 11th July 2024, was an alumni talk by Ms. Smriti and Mr. Sam Edwin (Batch: 2020-2023). They motivated the students by discussing the current scenario in biotechnology and its merits. They emphasized the importance of participating in various co-curricular and extracurricular activities available in the department and institute. They also shared their experiences, challenges, and future opportunities in the biotechnology industry. At the end of each session, a vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Suresh S., Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology.
