EVENT REPORT_TALKIES 24

 

The School of Media Studies, Department of Visual Communication & Film Technology at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram, organized The Talkies Media Workshop 2024 on the 7th and 8th of October, 2024, at the TRP Auditorium from 10 AM to 4 PM. This two-day event brought together media professionals who shared their expertise in filmmaking, cinematography, acting, and music, offering students valuable insights and practical knowledge.

 

Day 1 began with Mr. Rajesh, a film director, who discussed his latest film Brother and shared his journey as a filmmaker. He highlighted the challenges of working with producers and the creative process behind making a film. Following this,Session-2 with Mr. Richard M. Nathan, a renowned cinematographer, explained the technical aspects of cinematography, using examples from his films to showcase camera settings and equipment choices while stressing the importance of sincerity in visual storytelling.

 

Day 2 featured Mr. Pari Elavazhagan, director of Jama, who spoke about his experiences as a debut filmmaker. He discussed the traditional art form of Therukoothu and its integration into his film, offering insights on navigating the industry as a first-time director. Later, Session-4 with Mr. Guru Somasundharan, actor and director, gave an engaging session on acting and directing, addressing students’ queries in detail. The workshop concluded with a vibrant session by Mr. M. K. Balaji, a playback singer, who performed his popular songs and discussed the importance of lyrics in storytelling. His energetic performance and interaction with students added a fun and fulfilling end to the workshop.

 

The event was coordinated under the leadership of Dr. V. Prabakaran, Convenor and Head of Media Studies, with Ms. P. Yuvarani and Mr. Shanmuganathan serving as Co-convenors. Student coordinators included Kashika (I Yr, Visual Communication), Sri Kishore (II Yr, Visual Communication), Lakshman (PG, Visual Communication), and Mahish (II Year, Film Technology). Ms. P. S. Padmavathy and Ms. J. Jenifer, Assistant Professors from the Department of Visual Communication, acted as staff coordinators. The enriching event enhanced students’ understanding of media and film through direct interaction with industry experts.
