2-Days National Workshop on Bioprocess Techniques aimed to provide various relevant techniques for biopharmaceutical process development and optimization including upstream processing, harvest techniques, downstream processing, and analytical characterization through guest lecturers and hands on training.

Synopsis of the event
- The event was conducted for two days, 19th and 20th of December 24, 2024
- Under graduate and Post graduate students from different institutions participated in the workshop.
- The experts in the relevant area of expertise demonstrated the sessions with theroy and practicals.
Day 1
The first day of workshop began with the inaugural session at Block V, first floor, Gallery hall 1, SRMIST, Ramapuram, Chennai. Dr. M. Kamaraj, Associate Professor, Head of the Department, convenor of the workshop welcomed the participants. Dr.G. Priya, Assistant Professor, organizing secretary, briefed about the workshop. Mr.Gopinath, III B.Sc., Biotechnology introduced the chief guest, Dr.Priya Elamvazhuthi, Associate Vice President, Ticel BioPark, Taramani, Chennai. The resource person delivered a detailed view on product development in the field of biotechnology, possible approaches in establishing a biotechventure with inventive developments for the benefits of the society. Dr. A.Ancy Jenifer, Assistant Professor, organizing secretary, delivered the vote of thanks. The next plenary session was delivered by resource person Dr.P.E.Jagadeesh Babu, B.Tech., M.Tech., Ph.D, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Karnataka. The session included detailed explainations about different steps involved in the bioprocess techniques, especially about the production of biopharmaceuticals including upstreaming process, harvesting, downstreaming process, chromatographic techniques, and instrumental analysis.
The afternoon day 1 of workshop followed with the session 1 on hands on training on solid-state fermentation techniques demonstrated by Dr.S.Suresh, Assistant Professor, and organizing secretary, Department of Biotechnology, SRM IST, Ramapuram. The participants were intorduced to prepare medium for solid state fermentation and ration of contents to be added in the preparatory steps. They were giving individual training in preparing the media for fermentation process.
The next session of the workshop was handled by Dr.R.Vinoth Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, SRM IST, Ramapuram. He expalined and demonstrated about various types of PCR, RT PCR, and its working mechanism. The participants were provided with details on operating PCR machine, sample preparation steps and result analysis part.
The last session of the day was handled by Dr.G.Priya, Assistant Professor and Dr.A.Ancy Jenifer, Assistant Professor, about SDS-PAGE. The session included preparation of buffers and gel, setting up SDS-PAGE, protein isolation from samples and separation using SDS-PAGE. Hands on training was provided to students in all the processes.
Day 2
The second day of the workshop was conducted in TICEL BioPark, Tramani, Chennai. Dr.Sentil Kumar, Director, Ticel BioPark interacted with the participants and detailed the bioprocess techniques in pharmaceutical product development, quality check, commercialization procedure that are currently in practice in the pharma industry. He explained and differentiated about GMP na GLP practices in pharma product development procedure.
Later the participants were taken for visit into the laboratories and instrumentation facilty. Mr.Vinoth, guided the participants effectively by explaining all the mechanisms and processes in each instrumentation facilty available.
The workshop participants were provided certificates for their active involvement and participation in the 2 days session.
