SUMMARY OF THE EVENT:

The “Abode of Care” social service event, organized collaboratively by the Faculty of Science and Humanities, National Service Scheme (NSS) – SRMIST, and the Department of Fashion Designing’s Socio-Activity Club, aimed to spread warmth and compassion to the elderly residents of Akshaya Trust, Ramapuram. The event was crafted to resonate with the core values of NSS and uphold the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those that promote good health, well-being, and reduced inequalities.

The primary goal of “Abode of Care” was to bring joy to elderly residents by providing them with new clothes, a gesture symbolizing respect, care, and compassion. This small act was also intended to enhance the residents’ sense of dignity and well-being, fostering a warm and inclusive environment. Aligning with SDG objectives, the event emphasized reducing inequalities and ensuring that vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, receive attention, care, and support.

Distribution of Clothes: Volunteers from the NSS and the Socio-Activity Club prepared and distributed new clothing to each elderly resident. The event was met with smiles and gratitude from the residents, who were touched by this thoughtful gesture.

Interactive Sessions: Volunteers engaged with the residents through storytelling, conversations, and games, creating a lively and warm atmosphere. These interactions bridged the gap between generations, bringing joy to both the students and the residents.

Awareness of Health and Well-being: The event also included an informal discussion on health and personal well-being. Volunteers shared tips and simple exercises that could help the elderly stay active and improve their health.

OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAM: (Based on SDG and Feedback)

The “Abode of Care” event further demonstrated SRMIST’s dedication to promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). By focusing on the well-being of elderly residents—a demographic often marginalized and overlooked—this initiative worked to reduce inequalities and contribute meaningfully to their mental and emotional health. Providing new clothes and spending quality time with residents emphasized that their well-being is a community priority.
