SUMMARY OF THE EVENT:
Proceeded with welcome address by Ms. Swetha Menon N. P, Head of the Department, Department of Fashion Designing, who highlighted about the National Handloom Day and its importance.
The session was handed to the chief guest who started with a small introduction about his travel in the art of weaving. He stated that handloom weaving is not just a craft; it’s a cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations. Each piece of product is a testament to the skill, dedication, and creativity of artisans who weave magic with their hands. The intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and unique textures are a reflection of the diverse traditions and stories from different regions. As you admire the exquisite fabrics, remember that every thread tells a story of craftsmanship and dedication. The beauty of handloom lies in its individuality – no two pieces are ever identical, each one carrying the personal touch of the weaver. He also added that the traditional craft with deep cultural and economic significance, are facing unprecedented challenges. He also added the key issues contributing to the eradication of this heritage, analyzes the implications, and suggested the potential strategies for revitalization. In the end of his speech, he asked the gathers for their presence and interest support needed to continue for this cherished tradition and the livelihoods of talented artisans. Asked the students to join together, can work towards the preservation and revitalization of handloom textiles, ensuring their continued significance in our cultural and economic landscapes.
Mr. J. Sathya Narayanan, Assistant Professor of Department of Fashion Designing, proposed the vote of thanks. He expressed heartfelt gratitude for the guest’s valuable insights and inspiring words, acknowledging the profound impact they had on the students and faculty. His closing remarks highlighted the importance of collaboration and learning of handloom from this weaving cluster and support, develop and extend the weaving techniques and products to all over the worldwide with the aim of sustainability.
OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAM:
SDG 1: No Poverty
These events will help to bring the awareness of handloom sector among the students and elders and by this they can promote the usage of handloom and they can increase the sales for weavers.
SDG 2: Zero Hunger – Handloom in India, though its old techniques but due to various reasons, in recent days the sales are not up to remarkable level, so the weavers suffered a lot. The awareness program like these will bring the knowledge among the youth and increase in sales.
SDG 4: Quality Education – Through these programs’ students learnt the techniques of selling, reason behind the price variation between the products.
SDG 5: Gender Equality – Handloom sarees though worn by women of India but manufactured by both male and females, also the manufacturing and sales were shared among the genders, which bring the equality among them.
