SUMMARY OF THE EVENT:

The event held on 27/08/2024 at AV hall, Central library Block, commenced with a welcome speech by Rishi, a second-year JMC student, followed by the Tamil Thai Vazhthu. The HOD delivered the welcome address, introducing Ms. Rukma Sripriya, an alumna of MOP Vaishnav College, and her colleague Ridhi, a financial controller at MOP. The HOD also highlighted upcoming JMC department events and discussed advancements in the field. Her speech then focused on the procurement of content for electronic media, emphasizing the need to stay updated, source authentic data, and master content curation and development skills in the digital era.

Ms. Sripriya’s presentation commenced with an explanation of e-content, defining it as multimedia content created and consumed in digital formats. She covered various types of e-content, including video, multimedia, audio, visual, and text-based content. The discussion extended to the applications of e-content in corporate training, education, and more.

Ms. Sripriya highlighted the critical role of e-content in journalism, noting its ability to provide instant access, visual engagement, and wide accessibility. She addressed the decline in print media and the growing preference for digital content among younger audiences. This was illustrated through an audience poll on newspaper readership, revealing a significant shift towards digital media consumption.

The session included a comprehensive look at different content types, with examples such as blogs for text-based content, infographics for visual content, and podcasts and YouTube for multimedia content. Ms. Sripriya introduced Marshall McLuhan’s concept, “the medium is the message,” and discussed its relevance in understanding how different media shape content perception.

Key aspects of e-content management were explained, including assessment, sourcing, licensing, negotiation, integration, and distribution. Using a party planning analogy, she illustrated the importance of content management systems such as WordPress, Drupal and design tools such as Canva, and Illustrator, audio editing tools such as Audacity, Adobe Audition, and Final Cut Pro, and social media management tools like Hootsuite, Buffer. She also covered search engine optimization, user experience, and user interface and its relevance in procuring e-content.

During the practical session, attendees were divided into groups of five and assigned topics such as education learning platforms, the stock market, immersive learning tools such as AR and VR, and sensational news. Each group had two minutes to research and ten minutes to create and present their content, including crafting a headline and sourcing a relevant picture. The exercise provided hands-on experience in e-content creation and presentation, allowing participants to apply the skills discussed in the session and engage actively with the material. The outcomes demonstrated the practical application of content management skills and facilitated immediate feedback and learning.

A notable segment of the presentation was a video and interview about Local 2024, an art exhibition in Chennai where Ms. Sripriya participated and showcased her Nagalingam flower art. The interview, conducted by J. Sam Daniel from NDTV, highlighted the importance of preparation and research in content creation which are questions tailored according to the audience.

Ms. Sripriya discussed e-content management practices, including content organization, maintenance, utilization, and the importance of legal and ethical considerations such as copyright and intellectual property rights. She also addressed personalization, emerging trends like AI automation, emotional content, and the necessity of fact-checking tools like Google Scholar and ResearchGate. Augmented reality and virtual reality were mentioned as evolving elements in the field.

The session concluded with a case study on the Times of India, discussing its transition to e-content, challenges, strategies, and the impact of content pushing. Practical advice was provided on creating trending content and tailoring marketing strategies to audience preferences.

The event ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Ruthika, a third-year JMC student, followed by the presentation of a memento to Ms. Sripriya by HOD Dr. Meenakshi. A group photo session of all attendees was conducted, and the event concluded with the National Anthem, marking a successful and informative session.
