The Department of English & Other Foreign Languages successfully organized a One Week Book Review Forum under Book Review Club. This event, designed for both faculty and students, aimed to encourage reading, critical analysis, and discussion of literature across different genres and languages.
Event Overview
The forum took place over five days, from February 18 to February 22, 2025, featuring faculty members and students reviewing a diverse selection of books in English and Tamil. Each session provided valuable insights into various literary works, fostering intellectual engagement and discussion among the participants.
Speakers & Book Reviews
Day 1 – 18th February 2025
Mr. G. Ganesh (Assistant Professor of Tamil) reviewed a Tamil literary work, நெய்தல் கைமணம், எழுத்தும் தொகுப்பும்: அ.பகத்சிங் & ர.நிரஞ்சனா, offering an in-depth analysis of society and lives of the fishermen.
Dr. R. Blessy (Assistant Professor of English) reviewed Sita’s Sister by Kavita Kane, a novel that explores Indian mythology from a feminist perspective.
Day 2 – 19th February 2025
Ms. Mythili (B.Sc CS C) presented her review of The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma, a book on self-development and mindfulness.
Ms. T. Kaviya (B.Sc CS C) discussed You Only Live Once by Stuti Changle, a contemporary novel about following one’s dreams.
Ms. Moumitha (B.Sc CS L) reviewed Maybe In Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which explores the concept of fate and choices in life.
Day 3 – 20th February 2025
Mr. V. Manikandan (Assistant Professor of Tamil) analyzed a Tamil literary work, கோவேறு கழுதைகள by இமையம் providing a criticism on discrimination on the basis of casteism in the society.
Day 4 – 21st February 2025
Mr. M. Divahar (Assistant Professor of Tamil) reviewed a translated Tamil book, கூண்டுப் பறவை ஏன் பாடுகிறது? by அவை நாயகன் by highlighting its relevance in contemporary African American literature.
Day 5 – 22nd February 2025
Dr. N. Kanagarasu (Assistant Professor of Tamil) examined a significant Tamil text, வெட்டுக்கிளி பெண் by கௌரி offering insights into its literary and philosophical themes.
Impact of the Event
The One Week Book Review Forum was a great success, bringing together faculty and students in an enriching literary discussion. The diverse selection of books, spanning fiction, mythology, self-help, and literary classics, allowed for varied perspectives and deep conversations. The event reinforced the importance of reading and critical thinking, inspiring students to explore literature beyond their academic curriculum.
