SUMMARY OF THE EVENT: 

The Department of Biotechnology organized a bridge course for the first-year biotechnology students for the academic year 2025-2026 on 10-07-2025 and 11-07-2025 at new admin block, 105, SRM IST, Chennai Ramapuram. A total of 70 students participated in this course. The The first day session was inaugurated by Dr. M. Kamaraj, Associate Professor and HoD and delivered his lecture on the title “Overview of Biotechnology”. He detailed and introduced about the various concepts of biotechnology and its interdisciplinary areas. The session was followed by a lecture delivered by Dr. S.Suresh, Assistant professor on “The Molecular Mysteries: A Biochemist’s insights into Life’s Building Blocks”. He has explained about the biomolecular structure to the role of biochemistry in medicine and biotechnology. The next session was then handled by Dr. G. Priya, Assistant Professor with her talk on “Fundamental concepts and applications of Plant Biotechnology”. She has explained everything from tissue culture to transgenics and regulatory frameworks. The next session was handled by Dr. G. Rajendran, Assistant Professor with his talk on “Application of Nanotechnology in Biotechnology”. He has detailed about the nanoparticle synthesis to gene delivery and cancer therapy; also explained diagnostics, biosensors, and food sector innovations.

The second day session was started by Dr. R.Vinoth Kumar, Assistant professor for his talk on “Applications of Biotechnology in Food Industry”. In his lecture, he has detailed about the application of biotechnology in food industry such as food preservation, bioprocessing food, food fermentation and advanced techniques with modern tool usage.  The next session was handled by Dr. R. Vidhya on the topic “Animal Cell Culture – Past, Present and Future”. She explained the importance of invitro cell culture studies and its pivotal role in pharmaceutical and biotechnological applications. The next session was handled by Dr. A.Amala, Assistant Professor with her talk on the title “Next Generation Sequencing Technologies and its applications in Biotechnology”. She has detailed about the whole genome sequence, RNA-seq, Epigenomics. Finally, this session was concluded by a lecture delivered by Dr. T. Ramesh on the title “Basic concepts in Environmental Biotechnology”. He detailed his talk about the importance of microbial communities and their roles in environmental processes like nutrient cycling and waste degradation.

OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAM:

The 70 students who attended the bridge course benefitted by getting insights on recent trend in research and development in various sub-fields of biotechnology thereby giving them options to explore.
