POST EVENT SUMMARY REPORT

Department of Commerce (Accounting & Finance) organized Five Days International Faculty Development Program on “Research and Innovation” from 5th July 2021 to 9th July 2021. The aim of this IFDP is to cover the theoretical part in research and also to explore innovative areas in the field of research. The IFDP was open to academicians, research scholars and also for other professionals who are interested in research. Five eminent speakers from Malaysia, Saudi, Oman and India discussed various sub topics related to research and innovation.

 

IFDP SUMMARY OBJECTIVES:

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

To explore knowledge in research and its methodologies and also to explore innovative aspects involved in research.

SECONDARY OBJECTIVES

To assess the awareness towards reference software used in research.

To gain deep knowledge towards multidisciplinary research and collaborative research

To identify the techniques used in writing reviews and also to understand the techniques involved in citing the article.

DAY 1 (MONDAY – 5TH JULY 2021 @6.00 PM) INAUGURAL FUNCTION

The programme started with “தமிழ் தாய் வாழ்த்து ” followed by digital lighting of lamp at Inaugural Ceremony. Mrs. R. Vinodhini carried  out  the  Emcee  for the five  day program.

Dr. A. Jayabal, HOD of Commerce in his welcome address welcomed Principal Dr. C. Sundar, Vice Principal – Academic Dr. N. Ashokan, Vice Principal Administration Dr. J. Dhilipan, department staffs, and chief guest of the day Dr. John J. Thambirajah.

Dr. V. Deepa, Head Incharge – Department of Accounting & Finance highlighted the program objectives. In her address she said that research is a continuous process and explained the primary and secondary objectives of the program.

Dr. N. Ashokan, Vice Principal (Academic), in his felicitation address mentioned about classroom research. There are different kinds of students, understanding their interest is important. Understanding their school, cyclic process and reflecting them in research. He also stated the managerial leadership, in next 10 years staff should under the managerial leadership concepts, how to manage the classroom, changes in higher education etc. He also stated about teaching and research and teaching pedagogy. Finally he thanked the participants for their interest towards the program.

DAY 1 – SESSION

Chief Guest: Dr. John J. Thambirajah

Topic: Understanding the dynamics of research philosophy

Mrs. R. Vinodhini, Assistant Professor introduced the guest to the gatherings

Dr. John J. Thambirajah, Faculty of Dentistry, AIMST University, Semeling / Bedong Kedah D.A, Malaysia, started his discussion towards

“Understanding the dynamics of research philosophy and research dynamics”. In his speech he stated about ontology, epistemology and axiology and their relevance to business research. He explained research process  as  „onion‟  with  indicates  multiple  layer  in research. Dr. John also explained in detail about deductive and inductive research (cycle of research). He further made clear about pilot testing ethical principal in scientific research.

Finally, Dr. R. Aarthi Alamelu, Assistant Professor given a brief summary of the day‟s session and

DAY 2 (TUESDAY – 6TH JULY 2021 @6.00 PM)

Chief Guest: Dr.Ponmurugan .K, Research Associate, King Saud University, Riyadh Saudi Arabia

Topic: Fundamental technology and proficiency of research publication through reference software.

Dr. V. Deepa, Head i/c formally welcomed the guest and the participants for the 2nd day IFDP.

Mrs. R. Vinodhini, Assistant Professor who carried out emcee, introduced the guest to the gatherings.

Guest speaker Dr.Ponmurugan started the session with the tile „how to structure your article‟ professor mentioned as to make the article concise as possible. Moving to the major part he stated how to manage our reference in a effective

way and the reference management process. He also mentioned different reference tools available for research and how to choose them. He gave in depth explanation to Mendeley software (free academic software). Live demo was give by Prof. Ponmurugan towards the software, like how to add articles, managing your library, highlighting and annotating, collaborating with research team etc.,

DAY 3 (WEDNESDAY – 7TH JULY 2021 @6.00 PM)

Chief Guest: Prof. (Dr.) Narasimman Sundararajan, Professor, Department of Earth Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman

Topic: How to Initiate Multidisciplinary Research and Collaborative Research

Dr. V. Deepa, Head i/c formally welcomed the guest and the participants for the 3rd day IFDP.

Dr. R. Aarthi Alamelu, Assistant Professor introduced chief guest to the participants.

Dr. Narasimman Sundararajan, started the session

„Think about the research‟, he stated that to keep ourselves interested towards we have to publish articles in high impact factor journals. If we begin with one good paper in reputed International Journal  it will influence our interest  automatically.

He  stated  that  some  personal  characteristics   like

interest, aptitude, commitment, hard working, pave the way for good research. Prof. Rajan explained what are the strength in multidisciplinary research like new way of acquire, it increase network of connection as well as prof. stated some of the weakness towards multidisciplinary research like problem of communicating a research topic from different disciplines. Prof. Rajan gave an in-depth explanation as „how to initiate multidisciplinary research‟ he stated that going multidisciplinary research does not mean leaving behind your skills – it means heading in new scientific direction using your own specialization.

DAY 4 (THURSDAY – 8TH JULY 2021 @6.00 PM)

Chief Guest: Dr.Lekshmi. R. S, Assistant Professor, Velammal Engineering College, Chennai Topic: How to Initiate Multidisciplinary Research and Collaborative Research

Dr. V. Deepa, Head i/c formally welcomed the guest and the participants for the 3rd day IFDP.

Dr. R. Aarthi Alamelu, Assistant Professor introduced chief guest to the participants.

Dr. Lekshmi, started the session with „how to write a literature review‟, and also explained a review should be comprehensive, fully referenced, relevant, balanced and analytical. She

also stated the purpose of ROL. When coming to „where to search relevant reviews‟, she mentioned few websites like Google scholar, JSTOR, EBSCO, Project Muse, Medline etc., To search an article effectively, she mentioned to use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and check bibliographies for more sources. Finally, in the presentation Dr. Lekshmi mentioned the steps to write literature review clearly and the common mistakes to be avoided while writing.

DAY 5 (FRIDAY – 8TH JULY 2021 @6.00 PM)

Chief Guest: Dr. K. Ramasamy, Librarian, MV Muthaiah Government Arts College for Women, Dindigul

Topic: Tips and Tools to cite the reference properly in your research work

Dr. V. Deepa, Head i/c formally welcomed the guest and the participants for the 5th day IFDP and also introduced the guest to the gatherings.

Dr. K. Ramasamy started his presentation with

„research can be an assignment – in class to post doctorate research‟. He stated where to others contents and how properly to cite others. He also stated the importance of citation, like citation supports once idea and shows respect for fellow academician and researchers. He affirmed what has to be acknowledged, like direct quotations. To paraphrase correctly, the author must change    and    rewrite    the    original  language

completely, including the original sentence structure. Tables, figures, graphs, diagrams, or image obtained from any sources also be cited in our research work. In some cases authors are not supposed to cite which includes their own thoughts, common knowledge, facts available. He explained different methods of referencing like Harvard, APA, MLA styles. He gave detailed explanation for paraphrasing, reference management tools, (Zotero). Finally he stated to do own work, acknowledge the work, and follow research ethics and to produce plagiarism free research.

At the end of session Dr. R. Aarthi Alamelu, Assistant Professor formally thanks the guest for sharing his knowledge towards citation and paraphrasing and thanked the participants for actively participating in the five days international faculty development program.

 

VALEDICTORY CEREMONY

At the Valedictory function, welcome address was given by Dr. A. Jayabal, HoD – Department of Commerce, followed by Felicitation Address given by Dr. N. Ashokan, Vice Principle – Academics. Dr. V. Deepa, Head in charge presented the report on IFDP.

To honour the guests Mrs. R. Vinodhini displayed E – certificate and thanks the guest for their participation. Later participants shared their experience towards the program and finally   Dr. V. Deepa gave vote of the thanks and thanked Principal Dr. C. Sundar, Vice Principal – Academic Dr. N. Ashokan, Vice Principal Administration Dr. J. Dhilipan, AF & ISM department staffs. The International faculty development program was concluded by National Anthem at the end.
