One – Week National Level Faculty Development Program (FDP)
The Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram campus has organized a virtual one-week Faculty Development Program (FDP) on “Research Prospects and Progress in Biological Science (RPBB – 2022) from 04.07.2021 to 10.07.2022.
AVENUES OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
The Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Humanities, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Ramapuram campus has organized a virtual one-week Professional Development Program (PDP) on “AVENUES OF BIOTECHNOLOGY” from 20.06.2021 to 26.06.2022.
In this 7-day PDP program, seven eminent speakers from different leading institutions were invited to deliver the lecture. It includes five faculties and two industrial personalities. Totally, 288 faculties, teachers and research scholars across the country were registered in this program. On the first day, the program was inaugurated with a formal welcome address delivered by Dr. Kamaraj. M, Associate Professor & Head (i/c). Subsequently, Dr. R. Ganesamoorthy of the Department of Chemistry, Vinayaga Mission Research Foundation, Salem, Tamil Nadu, has delivered a lecture on “Nano-materials in water treatment” and detailed the types of nanomaterials involved in water treatment, application, and limitations.
Panting competition on Biodiversity –Wild about life
The Department of Biotechnology, SRMIST, Ramapuram has conducted an online painting competition entitled “Panting competition on Biodiversity –Wild about life ” as part of World diversity day on May 22nd, 2022. The event started on 22 nd May 2022 to May 30 th, 2022, for the higher secondary school students and undergraduate students. The main objective of the event is to promote the subject of biological natural heritage, like the natural regions, the ecosystems, the habitats, and the species of wild fauna and flora, through the selection and classification of works, drawings, and illustrations. Overall, 35 participants actively participated in the context and submitted diverse paintings to describe the given topic. Further, the winners of this competition were selected by Dr.M.Kamaraj, Associate Professor and Head Incharge, Department of Biotechnology–Convenor, and Dr.S.Manimegalai co-convenor. All the participants are appreciated with e-certificate.
BASICS OF CANCER CELL CULTURE TECHNIQUES
The Department of Biotechnology conducted a one day webinar on 27.10.2020 titled ‘Basics Of Cancer Cell Culture Techniques’ for the beneficiary of UG/PG students, Research Scholars and Faculty members. The Resource person, Dr. M.D. Balakumaran, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, D.G. Vaishnav College, Chennai has gave a lecture on cancer cell culture techniques. He started his talk by explaining the cell culture techniques and its importance. He also explained the various applications of cell culture, methods of culture and types of cancer cells. Around 85 participants attended the online session from various institutions. The presentation was followed by a Q & A session. The webinar was convened by Dr. T. NANOMATERIALS: BASICS AND APPLICATIONS
The Department of Biotechnology conducted a one day webinar on 28.09.2020 titled ‘Nanomaterials: Basics and Applications’ for the beneficiary of UG/PG students, Research Scholars and Faculty members. The Resource person, Dr. R. Ramachandran, Postdoctoral Fellow, Laboratory of Functional Molecules & Materials, Shandong University of Technology, China has gave a lecture on the Nanomaterials. He started his talk on the synthesis of nanomaterials and its types. He also explained the various applications that are involved by the nanomaterials in the field of medical, agriculture, industries and environments. The online session was attended by around 50 participants from various institutions. The presentation was followed by a Q & A session. The webinar was convened by Dr. T. Sekar, HOD/Biotechnology and well-coordinated by the faculty members Dr. S. Suresh, Assistant Professor and Dr. A. Rajasekar, Assistant Professor. E-certificates were mailed to all the participants.
PRODUCTION OF BIODIESEL FROM MARINE MACRO ALGAL BIOMASS
The Department of Biotechnology conducted a one day webinar on 25.08.2020 titled ‘Production of Biodiesel from Marine Macro Algal Biomass ‘ for the beneficiary of UG/PG students, Research Scholars and Faculty members. The Resource person, Dr. S. Renganathan, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Anna University, Chennai has spoken about the essential use of marine macro algae and its various types. He started his talk on how the macro algae biomass helps in the production of biodiesel. He also explained the importance in the production of biodiesel as an alternative resources. Later, he discussed about the various characterization studies used for quantification of biodiesel. The online session was attended by around 92 participants from various institutions. titled ‘Opportunities for Life Science Students in Healthcare Industry’ for the beneficiary of
+2, UG/PG students. The Resource person, Dr. R. Balabhaskar, Product Manager, PrimeGen Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., Chennai has spoken on the current opportunities in healthcare industry. He started his talk on how the healthcare industries work and their growth in India. He also explained the importance of disease screening methods for obtaining the current health status of an individual. Later, he discussed about qualities to be attained for getting in to a healthcare industry, interview preparation and technical skill set development. The online session was attended by around 200 participants from various institutions. The presentation was followed by a Q & A session. The webinar was convened by Dr. T. ONLINE COMPETITION – PLAY CONNECTION
The Biotech Consortium (A Student’s association forum), department of Biotechnology, SRMIST, Ramapuram, Chennai has conducted an online competition – PLAY CONNECTION during 01.07.2020 – 15.07.2020 for the beneficiary of +1, +2 & UG students. Around 150 participants were participated in the quiz competition in which 90% of the participants were scored above 40% of marks. The faculty members Dr. S. Suresh and Dr.

The Biotech Consortium (A Student’s association forum), department of Biotechnology, SRMIST, Ramapuram, Chennai has conducted an online quiz competition – BIOTEQUE during 01.07.2020 – 10.07.2020 for the beneficiary of +2, UG, PG students, Research scholars and Faculty members. Around 1300 participants were participated in the quiz competition in which 95% of the participants were scored above 40% of marks. The faculty members Dr. S. Suresh and Dr. A. CANCER IMMUNOTHERAPY
The Department of Biotechnology conducted a one day webinar on 27.06.2020 titled ‘Cancer Immunotherapy’ for UG/PG students, research scholars and teaching fraternity. The Resource person, Dr. Ruban Rex Peter, Post-doctoral Research Associate, Cardiff University, United Kingdom spoke on types of cancers, he explained the background of the disease its effects and current treatment methods. Later, he explained immunotherapy methods and finally, the session ended with the information regarding the studies to be carried out for the successful treatment of cancer diseases. The Department of Biotechnology conducted a one day webinar on 14.05.2020 titled ‘A global perspective of Molecular Diagnostic for COVID:19 – It’s strength and weakness’ for UG/PG students, research scholars and teaching fraternity. The Resource person, Dr. Raj Mohan B, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, NITK, Surathkal spoke on the introduction of green technology and how today with technological advancement, it is possible to produce environment friendly products. RT-PCR – A POTENTIAL TOOL FOR COVID-19 DIAGNOSIS
The Department of Biotechnology conducted a one-day webinar on 22.04.2020 titled ‘RT-PCR – A Potential tool for COVID-19 Diagnosis’ for UG/PG students, research scholars and teaching fraternity. The Resource person, Mr. R. Muralidharan, Specialized Medical Solutions W.L.L, Doha, Qatar started his lecture with the introduction to the corona virus and its transformation. Later, he explained the basics of RT-PCR technique and he talked about the method how it is used in the detection and diagnosis of COVID-19. Finally, the talk ended with the quantification and interpretation of RT-PCR results. The online session was attended by around 44 participants. The presentation was followed by a Q & A session. COVID-19: OVERVIEW AND POSSIBLE CURE FOR GLOBAL PANIC
The Department of Biotechnology conducted a one day webinar on 15.04.2020 titled ‘COVID-19: Overview and Possible Cure for Global Panic’ for UG/PG students, research scholars and teaching fraternity. The Resource person, Dr. R. Sivaramakrishnan, Department of Biochemistry, Chulalongkorn University spoke on the corona virus, its types and classification. Later, he explained the mechanism and mode of infection and talked about the traditional medicines that are practised in our country for such viral infections. Finally, the talk ended with the protection and precautions to be adopted by us against the COVID 19. The online session was attended by around 29 participants. ONLINE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
The Department of Biotechnology, SRMIST, Ramapuram has conducted an online photography competition entitled “Different Shades of Fungus From Home”. The event started from 26th June 2021 to July 5th, 2021, for the higher secondary school students and undergraduate students. Overall, 61 participants actively participated in the context. Further, the winner for this competition by Dr.T.Sekar, Professor and Head Department of Biotechnology–Moderator for this event. The event was Coordinated by Dr.S.Suresh, Dr.S.Manimegalai and Dr.G.Priya and made the event a great success
PARKINSON’S DISEASE AND NEURODEGENERATION
An expert talk on “PARKINSON’S DISEASE AND NEURODEGENERATION”.
The talk was given by Dr. Sathiya Sekar, M.Sc., Ph.D., PDF (Canada), FASc (AW), Researcher and Imaging Facility Manager, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, in the webinar held on 19-02-2022, Saturday from 11:00 am to 12.00 noon. The total number of participants registered and attended this expert talk is 95.
MY SCIENCE HERO
A club of Bioconsortium organized an online scientific competiton “ My Science Hero” from 15-03-2022 to 28.03.2022. The school students, UG and PG college students were participated in this program. About 140 students were participated from various schools and colleges (28) in all over India. The participants were submitted their science hero from various disciplines like Biotechnology, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry and so on
STRESS MANAGEMENT-KEY TO CONQUER THE EXAMS
“A Club of Bioconsrtium” has organized an online expert talk on “STRESS MANAGEMENT-KEY TO CONQUER THE EXAMS” presented by Dr.T.Siva Ilango, Professor and Consultant Psychiatrist, SPARC clinic, Chennai, held on 30-04-2022, Saturday from 11:00 am to 12.00 pm. The participants were registered from all over of Tamil Nadu and the total number of participants attended in this expert talk was 80. Participants were asked their questions and interacted with the guest. The participants were commended that this program is very useful to them to reduce and manage the stress for the upcoming exam period and gave a lot of confident. At the end of session, the feedback link has been shared with the students and the E-Certificate was provided to those filled the feedback link
